Nice: A gigantic Whereoden candle arch, which is unique in its kind, is welcoming the visitors. Editor’s tip: A special highlight is the Stollen Festival taking place on the Saturday before the second Sunday in Advent. The elements that make up the festival include the historic Stollen procession and the slicing of the Stollen with the special Stollen knife. Everybody can buy a piece - the proceeds will go to charity!

Christmas Market in the Royal Palace

Advent Spectaculum in the stable yard of the Dresden Palace means "Medieval Christmas". Come to see the furnaces, ovens and charcoal grills, watch the cupbearers simmer home made mead, wines and fruit juices and medieval handicraft that has been traded and bargained for over 500 years.

Seiffen Christmas Market

Switching on the lights in Seiffen's town hall square is the traditional start of the run-up to Christmas in the Erzgebirge mountains. At the Christmas market you can watch Seiffen's famous wood carvers at work and see new items take shape before your eyes. A stroll around Seiffen, the fairytale toy-making village in the Erzgebirge mountains is a real treat, plus there is a seasonal exhibition to enjoy at the toy museum. The torchlight procession along old mining tracks and the Grand Miners' Parade are traditional Christmas customs here. Romantic!

Christmas Market Annaberg-Buchholz

Traditional customs are alive and well at the Christmas market in the centre of Annaberg-Buchholz, normally amid plenty of snow. One of the prettiest markets in the Erzgebirge mountains, with a huge Christmas pyramid, its traditional stalls sell Yuletide gifts of all shapes and sizes. It has a cosy Christmas atmosphere and festive treats made to age-old recipes.

Leipzig Christmas Market

The history of Leipzig's Christmas market goes all the way back to 1767. It is one of the largest and most beautiful Christmas Markets in Germany, with around 250 stalls located on the city's historical market square. Attractions include a fairytale forest, a model railway display on Augustusplatz, an Old Medieval Christmas Market and the world's largest free-standing Advent calendar at 857m2. Editor’s tip for xmas shopping: Selling Sunday on 4th and 18th of Dec from 12 am to 6 pm!

Silesian Christmas Market in Goerlitz

There's no better way of getting into the festive spirit than at the Christmas market in Goerlitz, surrounded by the baroque and Renaissance architecture of Untermarkt square. More than 100 artisans, traders and caterers offer seasonal wares as well as food and drink from Silesia, Saxony, Poland and Bohemia in a brightly lit labyrinth of huts and stalls, with musical accompaniment from choirs and brass bands – a scene to warm anyone's heart.
